Leggett & Platt History
Leggett & Platt were one of the innovators of the mattress industry. In 1883 J.P. Leggett took a single cone spring wire coil and interlaced it with others. The coils were the mounted on a slat base. This was a brand new bedspring that had the mattress positioned on top. At the time mattresses were made of cotton, feather or horsehair. Leggett realized that he didn’t have all the knowledge required to manufacture and produce the new bedspring. He recruited his future brother-in-law, C.B. Platt. Platt’s father owned and operated Platt Plow Works. Working together they produced the bedspring that was patented in 1885. The company grew with a focus on the mattress industry. A natural progression occurred and they eventually developed wall-hugger technology in 1973, after purchasing Middletown Manufacturing, who had the components. Wall hugger was later incorporated into almost all of the adjustable bases that they have available.
